SUMMARY:Commons in Space 2022
DESCRIPTION:The increasing use of space\, from billionaire tourism to exploration of the Moon and Mars\, as well as the increasing near-misses with space debris\, has made many of us aware of space as a shared resource. How can the use of outer space be governed\, providing opportunities for private actors but also protecting the rights for current and future generations that have not yet the means to participate in space exploration? How do we ensure the long-term sustainability of space exploration activities\, as well as the safe use of Earth’s orbit? \nAs a virtual conference organized by the International Association for the Study of the Commons (IASC)\, we will facilitate a discussion between space scholars and scholars studying more traditional commons. What can we learn from governing shared resources on Earth to derive fair and productive outcomes when governing shared resources in space? And what can commons scholars\, working on local and regional scales\, learn from space commons that face governance on a scale beyond planet Earth? How can commons scholarship provide models for diverse stakeholder groups to have agency and voice as humanity takes important steps towards a sustained human presence on the Moon\, Mars\, and beyond? \nSSR Project Manager Florian Micco will participate in the Roundtable on “Policy coherence for tackling space debris” on 2 November\, 17:00-18:00 CET.

SUMMARY:UNOOSA World Space Week 2022 webinar series on "Space and Sustainability"
DESCRIPTION:As the only United Nations entity dedicated to space affairs\, the UN Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) is uniquely positioned to raise awareness about space exploration and use\, benefits stemming from humanity’s activities in space\, and sustainable use of this unique environment. \nThis World Space Week\, UNOOSA organizes an event series aimed at advancing awareness about sustainable space exploration for a sustainable planet.\nOn October 10\, Florian Micco from the Space Sustainability Rating will speak on the panel Utilizing the ultimate frontier responsibly.\n \n More information

SUMMARY:World Space Week Seminar Series 2022: Sustainable Space Economies
DESCRIPTION:Register\n \n	Leading up to World Space Week 2022\, celebrated under the theme ‘Space and Sustainability’\, WSWA is organizing the second webinar in the series celebrating the theme. \nThe creation of economically self-sustaining space sectors have become the focus of many countries\, ensuring that space activities are part of a wider ecosystem of domestically driven and retained socio-economic development. The financial cost for space operations\, however\, can be a great hindrance to the growth of the space economy. When additional sustainability constraints are added to the spacecrafts’ design and operation\, the challenge is even higher that space actors face. Some of the questions that panelists of the online event will discuss therefore are\, what does the concept of sustainable space economy entail; how sustainable economies can contribute to protecting our space environment; and what actions the global space community should take to ensure a sustainable space economy to thrive. \n \n	eSpace Executive Director Emmanuelle David will talk about how we can create a more sustainable space economy and why it is important. \n	“A new space economy is emerging\, bringing tremendous opportunity but also an increase of space traffic\, especially in low-Earth orbit. It is our responsibility to the next generation to ensure that we use space sustainably\, and dialogue between academia\, decision makers and industry which is key to the success of this endeavour.”

SUMMARY:Space Café WebTalk - "33 minutes with E. David and Dr. M. Rathnasabapathy"
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER HERE \nThis Space Café WebTalk will feature Emmanuelle David\, the executive manager of eSpace – EPFL Space Center and Dr Minoo Rathnasabapathy\, research engineer at the Space Enabled Research Group at MIT’s Media Lab\, in conversation with Torsten Kriening\, publisher of SpaceWatch.Global. \nRewarding safe and sustainable behaviour in space \nIn 2022\, more than one million objects larger than 1cm are orbiting the Earth\, posing significant challenges to current and future operations in the space environment. Developed by an international\, transdisciplinary consortium\, the Space Sustainability Rating provides an assessment system to encourage mission designs that are compatible with sustainable and responsible operations\, as well as on-orbit operations that reduce potential damage to the orbital environment and impact on other operators. Operators will also benefit from a certification rewarding good practices delivered by trustworthy and recognized third-parties entities\, showing their commitment and leading the path towards a more sustainable use of outer space. In 2021\, the EPFL Space Center (eSpace) was selected to host and operate the Space Sustainability Rating with the target to start operations in June 2022. \nEmmanuelle David is the executive manager of EPFL Space Center\, the entity that manages the operations of the SSR\, and Dr Minoo Rathnasabapathy is a research engineer at the Space Enabled Research Group at MIT’s Media Lab\, she has been involved in the design and the development of the rating. Together they will address how the rating has been designed and how operations are intended to be launched. The discussion will also address how such a rating can incentivize a sustainable use of outer space. \nThe audience will have an opportunity to ask questions in dialogue with Emmanuelle David and Dr Minoo Rathnasabapathy. \nSpaceWatch.Global is a Switzerland-based digital magazine and portal for those interested in space and the far-reaching impact of the space sector. \nThis Space Café WebTalk will be conducted in English. \n \nEmmanuelle David & Dr Minoo Rathnasabapathy\nWatch online HERE or via the ZOOM link down below.
